Beirut

               Beirut (Arabic: بيروت‎ Bayrūt, French: Beyrouth) is the capital and largest city of Lebanon. The exact population is unknown; estimates in 2007 ranged from slightly more than 1 million to slightly less than 2 million. Located on a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanon's Mediterranean coast, it serves as the country's largest and main seaport. Beirut is Lebanon's seat of government and plays a central role in the Lebanese economy, with many banks and corporations based in its Central District, Hamra Street, Rue Verdun and Ashrafieh. 
               The main landmarks in Beirut are: Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque (جامع محمد الأمين), Beirut Central District (وسط بيروت), Nejmeh square, Rue Maarad ( شارع المعرض), Avenue des Français, Garden of Forgiveness (Hadiqat As-Samah), St. Georges Cathedral Museum, Planet Discovery, Robert Mouawad Private Museum, Souk el Tayeb, Lebanese Parliament, Beirut City Hall, Grand Serail (السراي الكبير‎ (al saray al kabir)), Rafik Hariri Sculptural Garden, Khalil Gibran Garden, Roman Baths, Imam Ouzai Square, Zeytouneh Square, Samir Kassir Square, Martyrs' Square ( ساحة الشهداء‎ Sahet el Shouhada), Rafik Hariri Memorial Garden, Saint George Maronite Cathedral ( كاتدرائية مار جرجس للموارنة), St. Georges Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Grand Omari Mosque, St. Elie Armenian Catholic Cathedral, United Nations headquarters.
