The Sahara comprises several distinct ecoregions, and with their variations in temperature, rainfall, elevation, and soil, they harbor distinct communities of plants and animals. These ecoregions are: Atlantic coastal desert, North Saharan steppe and woodlands, Sahara desert ecoregion, South Saharan steppe and woodlands, West Saharan montane xeric woodlands, Tibesti-Jebel Uweinat montane xeric woodlands, Saharan halophytics, Tanezrouft. Some of the Saharian sand dunes can reach 180 metres (590 ft) in height.
