The 2009 estimated population for the city proper was around 8.84 million people, and has a land area of 1,485 square kilometres (573 sq mi). It is located in the Valley of Mexico (Valle de México), a large valley in the high plateaus at the center of Mexico, at an altitude of 2,240 metres (7,350 ft).
The main landmarks are Angel of independence (El Ángel de la Independencia), Mexican stock exchange (Bolsa Mexicana de Valores), Castillo de Chapultepec, Catedral Metropolitana de la Asunción de María, Mexico City Hall, Latinoamericana tower (Torre Latinoamericana), Monument to the Mexican revolution (Monumento a la Revolución), Museo Nacional de Antropología, National Palace of Mexico City (Palacio Nacional ), Paseo Reforma street, Square of the three cultures (Plaza de las Tres Culturas), Xochimilco, Zócalo plaza, World Trade Center Mexico City, Xochimilco Ecological Park, Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe), Aztec calendar stone ( Piedra del Sol).
